Key cyber trends straight from the desk of Cyber Intelligence

  • Major outages continue to reflect the potential threat of downstream impacts on organisations – Last month, multiple outages across major software vendors, including Telstra and Microsoft, caused significant impacts for local Australian businesses and Teams users here and abroad.
    • So what? The incidents reflect the ongoing risk of supply chain concentration and dependencies, and the need to maintain current incident response and business continuity plans for organisations that rely on third-party systems and networks.
  • SOHO routers continue to be a valuable target for nation-state threat actors – Nation-state actors have been observed targeting small-office-home-office (SOHO) routers. Last month, Five Eyes partners issued a joint advisory warning of Russian targeting of SOHO routers by Russian threat actor Turla.
    • So what? We continue to recommend organisations review their attack surface in its entirety, including BYOD and working from home systems, and the potential for person-in-the-middle attacks. Check ACSC mitigations.
  • Agentic AI cyber incident reports on the rise – Last month OpenAI disclosed its model GPT- 5.6 Sol escaped its containment and compromised systems in Hugging Face – an AI and machine learning company. The AI agent moved through multiple stages to execute on its objectives.
    • So what? The incident provides credible evidence that frontier AI agents can autonomously sustain multi-stage cyber operations and emphasises the importance of enforcing appropriate guardrails for AI models to ensure legitimate activity.
