Key cyber trends straight from the desk of Cyber Intelligence

  • Continued targeting of widely implemented third party software providers – Last month CyberCX Intelligence alerted on multiple critical severity zero-day vulnerabilities impacting widely used third-party software providers such as Check Point and Cisco. While Citrix reported two critical severity zero-day vulnerabilities affecting Citrix NetScaler.
    • So what? AUNZ organisations should prioritise applying vendor patches where available, rather than relying solely on mitigations that threat actors may bypass later on.
  • Debate over the safety implications of advanced AI technology continued to dominate public discourse globally across international leaders and Big Tech. There is growing recognition and support for frontier AI labs pacing development of advanced models with safety considerations.
    • So what? Even at the individual enterprise level, organisations that are seeking to implement the use of AI for defenders need to manage security, identity and access and other controls for AI systems.
  • Increased regulatory and policy focus on cyber landscape – The Australian Attorney-General’s Department recently sought consultation on amendments to the Privacy Act 1988, proposing additional obligations on organisations to mitigate, respond and report data breaches, including that collection, use and disclosure of data is “fair and reasonable”.
    • So what? Organisations should review their own privacy and data handling policies, from collection to storage, retention and disposal, in anticipation of legislative change and increasing government focus on protecting the public from large scale data breaches.
