- ASIO confirms Australian critical infrastructure compromised by nation state actors – In the ASIO Annual Threat Assessment 2026, Director-General of Security Mike Burgess confirmed nation state actors mapped the affected network and maintained persistence, likely in preparation for sabotage “at a time of their choosing”, marking the first such disclosure in Australia.
- So what? AUNZ organisations in critical sectors must review their current security preparedness to detect and respond to the potential of nation-state intrusions, especially those targeting operational technology and industrial control systems.
- Australian critical infrastructure security regulation steps up – The Department of Home Affairs amended the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 to enhance the Critical Infrastructure Risk Management Program Rules, applying more stringent cyber maturity requirements, including supply chain risk management obligations.
- So what? AUNZ critical infrastructure operators must stay abreast of a fast-evolving regulatory regime, anticipating and where possible, pre-emptively aligning to new obligations that may be switched on.
- Frontier AI models accelerate vulnerability discovery – As frontier AI models continue to become more advanced, CyberCX Intelligence observed several significant large-scale zero-day exploitation campaigns by financially motivated threat actors. Threat actors are increasingly exploiting AI tools to accelerate the speed and scale of vulnerability discovery and exploitation.
- So what? AUNZ organisations must urgently review their vulnerability patching protocols and reduce their attack surface, opportunities for privilege escalation and lateral movement by limiting their public exposure, applying strong IdAM controls, enforcing network segmentation, and leveraging behavioural detection opportunities.

Monash University will accept applications for its new Bachelor of CyberAI degree from 2 August 2026. CyberCX will jointly design and deliver the degree, with the first cohort commencing in Semester One, 2027.
