Building our cyber safe culture

October marks Cyber Security Awareness Month, Australia’s annual initiative led by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) to strengthen cyber resilience across the community.

This year’s theme, “Building our cyber safe culture”, highlights the shared responsibility we all have in protecting our information, systems, and people. CyberCX is proud to support this initiative by helping organisations build awareness, improve resilience, and foster a culture of security across their teams.

Why cyber awareness matters

Cyber attacks are increasing in both scale and sophistication. Threat actors are exploiting human error, outdated systems, and poor cyber hygiene to gain access to valuable data.

Cyber Security Awareness Month is a timely reminder that security is not only a technology issue – it’s also a people issue. Building awareness across every level of an organisation is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk and strengthen your cyber posture.

Use strong, unique passphrases

Avoid reusing credentials across accounts. Unique, complex passphrases significantly limit unauthorised access. Consider using a password manager to maintain them securely.

Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA)

MFA adds an additional layer of protection by requiring a secondary verification step. It remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to secure accounts.

Maintain secure backups

Regularly back up critical files to an encrypted, offsite location. In the event of a cyber incident, reliable backups ensure business continuity and rapid recovery.

FAQs

Answers to common questions about Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Cyber Security Awareness Month takes place every October. It’s an annual initiative that encourages individuals and organisations to strengthen their cyber defences and adopt safer online practices.

The 2025 Australian theme, announced by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), is “Building our cyber safe culture.”

The theme highlights the importance of shared responsibility in protecting information, systems, and communities from cyber threats.

During October, organisations are encouraged to raise awareness, educate staff, and review security practices.

Common activities include:

  • Hosting cyber awareness training sessions
  • Running phishing simulation campaigns
  • Updating policies and software
  • Promoting secure habits like using strong passphrases and enabling MFA

CyberCX partners with organisations to deliver tailored programs and workshops that help embed these behaviours year-round.

Cyber Security Awareness Month began in 2004 as a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCA).

It has since grown into a global movement, with Australia’s campaign led by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).
