Key cyber trends straight from the desk of Cyber Intelligence
- Denial of service (DDoS) attacks surge to record highs, with peak traffic recorded increasing from 0.7 tbps in 2013 to 7.3 Tbps in 2025. DDoS attacks have become a key method of ideologically motivated disruption, and are used by cyber extortion criminals to put extra pressure on victims.
- So what? As DDoS mitigation services become more widespread, threat actors are innovating to keep this tactic effective and intensify attacks.
- Stolen credentials continue to fuel breaches: In August, iiNet confirmed a large scale cyber breach exposing up to 280,000 customer’s details, with the source of the breach reported as stolen iiNet employee credentials.
- So what? Stolen credentials are one of the leading causes of cyber breaches. Avoid saving passwords in browsers and monitor the dark web for stolen credentials related to your organisation to understand your risk.
- Geopolitical turmoil drives cyber threats: Espionage threats are at all-time highs with ASIO assessing China, Russia and Iran as the primary espionage threats to Australia.
- So what? NZ entities face a complex web of cyber threats – as the geopolitical landscape deteriorates, expect cyber activity across the threat environment to intensify.
