The Katie Duczmal Memorial Scholarship aims to support female students who have an interest in a cyber security career and are commencing or continuing their cyber security education at an Australian university or TAFE.

The scholarship is open to female students in their final year or final semester of study.

The Katie Duczmal Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Katie Duczmal, a woman with a bright career in cyber security who found her life cut short by a rare and aggressive cancer. She passed away early in 2019, aged 35.

Overview

CyberCX is committed to growing the number of women in the cyber security industry by:

  • Increasing the number of women entering, continuing and leading in Australia’s security industry.
  • Supporting women on their career journey, and inspire women to pursue a career in security.
  • Helping build the Australian pipeline of talented security professionals.

The scholarship will assist the student with living expenses, to enable them to achieve their study and education goals.

One (1) scholarship will be awarded for the 2024 academic year.

A paid part time work placement (to be agreed) in the second half of the year will provide work experience and mentoring opportunities for the student to help round out their knowledge with hands on experience.

Scholarship applications will open in March 2024. 


Applicant eligibility

  • Australian Citizenship or Permanent resident.
  • Applicants must be enrolled to commence or be continuing their cyber security study at an Australian university or TAFE, in 2024 in a course with 12 months or less duration remaining.
  • CyberCX employees who are undertaking tertiary study, without existing financial support from CyberCX, are eligible to apply.

Distribution of payments

The scholarship recipient will receive a $10,000 scholarship (paid in one payment) to be applied to living expenses, including tuition fees and study materials for the 2024 academic year. Funds are provided directly by CyberCX. Payments are issued by CyberCX made payable to the student’s bank account to be used in a way most useful to support the student achieving their study goals.


Work placement

The part time work placement will be offered for the 2024 calendar year, this will be a paid at the applicable rate for the role. To be eligible for the work placement, the recipient will be subject to the same pre-employment checks (including Police Check) as all CyberCX employees.

To participate in work placement, the recipient needs to reside in NSW with access to the CyberCX Sydney office. All costs incurred to participate in the internship (eg transport costs to and from the office) are the responsibility of the recipient. Materials or equipment required for the work placement will be provided by CyberCX.


Recipient selection and announcements

All submissions will be reviewed after the closing date by a team of CyberCX Executives and Region Leaders.


Scholarship conditions

  • Applicants need to be living and studying in Australia and must be enrolled to commence or be continuing their cyber security study at an Australian university or TAFE, in 2024 in a course with 12 months or less duration remaining.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a course at a tertiary education provider registered with the Australian Government Tertiary Education Quality & Standards Agency (TEQSA).
  • The recipient must be actively enrolled for the entire academic year without interruption, barring illness, emergency, or defence reservist service.
  • CyberCX employees who are undertaking tertiary study, without existing financial support from CyberCX, are eligible to apply.
  • Applications close 11.59pm (AEDT) on 30 March 2024.
  • 1 scholarship will be awarded for the 2024 academic year.
  • Recipients will be advised via email in the week commencing 3 April 2024.
  • Recipients agree to the use of their name and image in promotional material (such as social media postings) but no personal data relating to the recipients will be shared with any third party without the recipient’s permission.
  • Recipients will be invited to participate in relevant Women in Cyber program events at CyberCX, such as International Women’s Day events held at CyberCX offices.
  • Recipients will not make public comments (including social media) about CyberCX without prior agreement with CyberCX. CyberCX will provide support as far as possible on requests received.
  • CyberCX reserves the right to alter or discontinue this program at any time without notice.
